Abstract:
This study demonstrates that the use of the UV/potassium persulfate (UV/PDS) system allows for the complete mineralization of a three chlorine-containing herbicides: dicamba, triclopyr and 2,4-dB. For the first time, a detailed analysis of the main photodegradation products of dicamba and 2,4-dB under UV irradiation alone and in a UV/PDS system has been performed. The primary mechanisms of herbicide photodegradation in the UV/PDS system are based on dissociative heterolytic cleavage of the Csingle bondCl bond upon a direct excitation of herbicides and its indirect photooxidation in a reaction with sulfate radicals. It has been established that the observed high efficiency of mineralization occurs not due to the direct photolysis of PDS, but due to photoactivation of persulfate by the degradation products of the original compounds. This mechanism of photodegradation of persistent pollutants has not been previously considered in the literature and is of interest for the development of photochemical advanced oxidation process using sulfate radicals.
