Abstract: Photophysics of 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (dpp) considered as a promising bridging ligand for the creation of polymetallic platinum metal complexes exhibiting light-activated cytotoxicity, was studied by means of stationary and time-resolved methods. Dpp is rather photostable in aqueous and acetonitrile solutions and non-luminescent. The triplet state of dpp (3dpp*) was detected upon n → π* excitation (355 nm) both in aqueous and acetonitrile solutions. In addition, dpp excitation at 266 nm (π → π* transition) in aqueous solutions resulted in formation of another excited state of triplet nature, which was not observed in CH3CN solutions. This state was interpreted as the triplet state of the protonated form 3dppH+*. Spectral and kinetic parameters of both triplet states are determined or estimated. Quantum yield of singlet oxygen formation in acetonitrile upon 355 nm excitation was measured to be (12 ± 1)%. The obtained information can be useful for describing the photophysics of metal complexes containing dpp, especially in the case of excitation into the intraligand (IL) absorption bands.
